DefendEar DigitalX 5

Custom Digital Noise Suppression. The Dx5 offers five modes that detect game movement while providing impulse suppression for continuous shots in addition to ambient sound enhancement.

Available through Audiologists only. The future of digital hearing protection is here, as the new DX5 is without a doubt the most technologically advanced form of hearing protection that Westone has ever offered! Our first digital model of hearing protection to feature five different programs or modes, as well as a mute function, the DX5 features a redesign of digital controls from its previous version (the DefendEar Digital Hunter), which it now replaces. The DX5 utilizes a new “center rocker switch” that allows users to more easily toggle between the five different modes featured in each module, while also allowing users to more easily control their volume settings with the same switch. Like the rest of the DEDX line, the DX5 offers a selection of six different metallic colors to choose from, and also utilizes a digital “Auto-Save” feature so your personal settings that are in place when you turn your DX5s off will still be in place the next time you turn them back on. Finally, as is the case with all other DEDX models, the DX5 comes with an extended two year warranty and is CE EN352 certified.

  1. GAME MODE - Outdoor Game Shooters. Following a gunshot, the device activates reducing output levels to keep the shooter safe from harmful noise. The sound level then immediately returns to normal, allowing the user to hear approaching quarry. A single microphone wind noise reduction algorithm is initiated in the program.
  2. CLAY MODE - Outdoor Clay Range. Optimized for a faster rate of fire with other shooters firing nearby, leaving the user exposed to more prolonged loud levels. A single microphone wind noise reduction algorithm is initiated in the program.
  3. RANGE MODE - Indoor Range Firing or Large Caliber. Ambient awareness is still provided although the reduced output levels may degrade close conversation. Double protection is advised while shooting indoors.
  4. WIRELESS COMMUNICATION - General Outdoor Shooting. Ambient awareness but with the added feature of wireless audio input via the Dx5 Neck Loop. The wireless levels have been increased over our previous DefendEar Digital product line models to provide a crisper sound quality. Full two-way communications are possible with the optional extra SRC harness. Each harness is made to suit the users proprietary radio. A remote PTT (transmit switch) and microphone is also provided so the user has basic remote access to the radio functionality. Neck Loop is sold seperately.
  5. HUNTER MODE - Outdoor Hunter/Game Stalker. Amplification of quieter sounds is reduced compared to the previous programs in order that the sound of footsteps on dry forestation and grass are reduced so as not to be annoying to the user. A single microphone wind noise reduction algorithm is initiated in the program.

All programs have been optimized for general conditions as each name suggests, however as every user’s perception of sound will vary, each user will find that the programs are also suitable in a range of different conditions or environments. The protection offered will not change regardless of users’ environment!

The DX5 vocally advises you which mode you are using, and updates you as you change between modes, ensuring the user is always aware of their selected mode. It will also alert you when you are at minimum or maximum volume levels. You will also hear beeps as you toggle through the levels in between. Vocal feedback is also given when battery power becomes low and critical.

The DX5 also feature a dedicated power button that doubles as a mute function, for those critical moments where concentration is key. The mute function is ideal for the competition shooter, some prefer the quietness of mute to allow concentration on their set up and preparation prior to calling a target.

The DX5 will remember your last set volume level and mode selection - even when the device is switched off or the battery is removed.

  • ZINC AIR BATTERY ADVISORY NOTICE It is important to understand that Zinc Air batteries used in DEDX products perform differently than traditional everyday batteries. Zinc air batteries are supplied with a tab on each cell. Once the tab is removed from the cell, the battery will activate and begin to discharge, even if placed into the DEDX module when the module is switched off. Replacing the tab when the battery is not in use will not extend the battery life. It is recommended that you always carry replacement batteries with you when using DEDX earpieces. Westone recommends that you only use high quality zinc air batteries in DEDX modules, such as Rayovac or PureCell Plus, which have a typical battery life 400 hours. Battery life may also vary depending on ambient sound levels and environmental conditions such as humidity.

DefendEar Gunshot Noise Hearing Protection White Paper

This product is designed for people with normal hearing only! The purpose of hearing protection is to reduce the impact of the sound and to reduce the potential for hearing loss. Hearing protection devices, including DefendEar products, do not eliminate sound. The user is responsible for determining whether the noise reduction provided by DefendEar products will provide adequate hearing protection based on the user’s unique medical history and exposure level. Your medical history, particularly any prior trauma to the ear or prior hearing loss, as well as the noise (decibel level and exposure time) the user will be exposed to should be considered prior to using DefendEar products. If you have any questions concerning the appropriate exposure levels or the level of hearing protection provided by DefendEar products, or if you have hearing loss or ear injuries, contact your local hearing professional before using.

I’ve worn these now for about 30 hours at the range. I’m very happy with my purchase, these are awesome and I wish I would have bought a set a long time ago. The 5 different setting levels make it very easy to customize the hearing protection for the type out outdoor or shooting activity. You won’t be disappointed, do yourself a favor and get a set now !

I was in the market for electronic hearing protection for hunting. I mainly hunt deer and waterfowl. After exposing myself to a few rifle and shotgun shots with unprotected ears and minor hearing damage/tinnitus I decided to spend the money. I looked at other brands including walkers, grizzly ears etc. My audiologist recommended the Westone brand as that was what he sold. The DX5s work great. They absolutely block and cancel the report of gunshots immediately. You can still hear perfectly. The molds are very comfortable. The different modes work great and battery life is good. You can still tell which direction noise is coming from and wind noise is not an issue. The only complaints i have are the buttons are small and you cannot really change modes etc with gloves on. This is not a huge deal, as you usually put them in and leave them alone. The amplification sometimes to me sounds unnatural, especially voices. These are minor complaints. I would absolutely recommend these to fellow hunters to protect your hearing.

Ok, I have fought off the custom in ear bug for a long long time. While at shot show this year I came across Westone/Cens booth. I stopped and chatted with for a few minutes and all was well. I was told to contact them a few weeks after shot for more info and perts and such Jeff Ipson is a great guy to chat with and answered ALL of my questions. I had tons of them. I'm sure he seen my cell number and email address and he took a big sighsss before answering.. SO, I finally talked myself into getting some custom in the ear hearing protection DX5's. I must say, The process was way easier that I thought it would be. I had to have a custom mold done of my ear canal and ear. I called a local audiologist 40 bucks and 20 minutes later I have the molds. I mailed them off to Jeff with the colors I wanted and a few other details and a week later the custom in ear DX5 was at my door.

The Dx5 are amazing.... Looking back I should have bought these years and years ago... There well worth the shekels. I have used mine for a few range trip with rifles and skeet. They work perfect and a very clear when listing to shooters talking. when they stop the shot sound is so fast you don't realize the DX5 did anything, but they do. The ear mold fit perfect and DO Not hurt your ears or make them sore after a few minutes. I have worn them for hours and hours and they are nice and comfy.I have went thru the volume and modes. I keep mine at around half volume and on range mode. also if there just in your ear and not turned on they are better than the foam plugs, so that is a bonus. The batteries are very cheap but last a lot longer than I thought they would in these. I'm at 200 hours and there still going strong. That just works best for me. I;m now hoping to get these for some of the skeet shooters I work with.
