Request: A major East Coast university was conducting a research study on the effect of different types and levels of sound on the ability to accomplish specified tasks. To restrict the number of variables and rule out any side effect from ambient noise, they had determined to provide each subject with custom earpieces fitted with a tube to transmit just the sounds included in the study. The problem? The study was being done on mice.

Solution: The study principals contacted Westone and asked if we could make custom earpieces that small. Always up for a challenge, we agreed to give it try. Not long after, we received a dozen sets of tiny impressions.

Colorado Springs, CO., Jun 9, 2011 – Westone Laboratories, Inc. teams up with the Spider Grips Ducati Race Team to provide motorcycle specific in-ear technologies and hearing protection as the riders defend their title at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

Westone has equipped Spider Grips Ducati Team riders Greg Tracy and Alexander Smith with CR-1 custom made earphones. These earpieces will provide riders with crystal clear communications from the team directors as well as noise attenuation up to 25db.

“Our CR-1 custom earphones use the latest in vinyl casting techniques and a Westone EPIC downward routed cable for extreme comfort even under full face helmets. High-fidelity sound is achieved using a full range balanced armature speaker adapted from the hearing healthcare industry,” explains Lynn Kehler, President and CEO.
